Two Medicine Campground is closed all of 2026 for construction. Here's why, what the valley looks like now, and where to camp instead.
If you planned a Glacier trip around a night at Two Medicine, the closure changes where you can camp and how you reach the valley. Two Medicine Campground is closed for all of 2026 because of construction. The road into the valley has also been closed to vehicles since September, so you can’t drive to the lake this October.
Yes, Two Medicine Campground is closed for the entire 2026 season because of construction. Both Recreation.gov’s campground listing and Glacier National Park confirm the closure. The park first announced the full-year closure in September 2025.
The closure is part of a multi-year project in the Two Medicine valley, where work on water infrastructure and the road affects access to the developed area. This is a season-long closure, not a short repair that clears up after a few weeks.
The summer visitor services did operate: boat tours and the campstore ran from May 29 through September 7. Since September, road construction has closed vehicle access to the valley. If Two Medicine was your planned base, check the status of other campgrounds before setting out, especially for fall or a 2027 trip.
Two overlapping construction projects are driving the closure: a complete water-system replacement and a major road rehabilitation.
The utility project is replacing the entire water distribution system in the Two Medicine developed area and campground. The National Park Service’s construction project updates describe the work affecting park facilities.
The separate road project covers 7.22 miles of Two Medicine Road, from the MT-49 intersection to the parking lot at Two Medicine Lake. The work includes ditches, road repairs, a new parking lot, new entrance station buildings, and paving. It began with a deep culvert replacement in fall 2025.
Granite Construction received the roughly $23.7 million federal contract on August 28, 2026. The park says road work is scheduled to continue through late 2027 and may extend into 2028. The National Park Service’s 2026 construction update gives the latest park-wide construction information.
As of October 8, you can’t drive into Two Medicine because the road is closed for construction.
The summer access window ran from May 29 to September 7, when the Two Medicine boat tours and campstore were operating. Starting September 8, the road closed at Running Eagle Falls Trailhead. In mid- to late September, the closure moved outward to the Highway 49 junction as road work expanded.
That means the valley is closed to vehicle access this October, including the drive to the campground and Two Medicine Lake. The National Park Service’s update on multiple utility projects also outlines construction affecting visitor access around the park.
Two Medicine Campground has 100 reservable sites and sits about 13 miles from East Glacier.
Generators are allowed only in Loops B and C. During the regular summer season, the fee is $30 per night; primitive-season camping costs $20 per night. The usual operating season runs from late May to mid-September, with primitive camping continuing into October.
Those dates and rates describe the campground’s normal schedule, not its 2026 availability. The current closure overrides the usual season, so don’t treat the typical October primitive period as an opening this year.
For a fall stay, check the status and booking rules at other Glacier campgrounds before you drive; their seasonal services differ.
St. Mary is open in primitive status, with no water and vault toilets only. Reservations are still required, though the campground listing’s primitive-season fee note says sites are first-come, first-served. Check Glacier’s campground reservation information and Recreation.gov before heading over. St. Mary is about 34 miles from Two Medicine, roughly an hour by road.
Many Glacier remains in primitive status until its winter closure begins October 20. On the west side, Apgar is primitive with only Loop B open. Cut Bank, a small campground on the east side, closed September 20.
Outside the park, the National Park Service points campers toward Blackfeet Nation campgrounds, the Flathead and Helena-Lewis and Clark national forests, and Montana state parks. Glacier’s entrance fee is $35 per vehicle for seven days, dropping to $25 on November 1.
Treat a 2027 opening at Two Medicine as unannounced; the construction schedule does not support assuming the campground will reopen by Memorial Day.
The campground listing shows its winter closure lasting through May 23, 2027, while the road project runs to late 2027 and could continue into 2028. The park has not announced a reopening date for the campground.
St. Mary, another major campground on the east side, is listed as fully closed from January 1 through June 30, 2027, for its own water work. More utility work at Lake McDonald Lodge and Many Glacier could begin in 2027 if approved.
Most Glacier campsites open for booking on Recreation.gov six months ahead. Watch the campground listing for a confirmed status before you reserve travel around Two Medicine.
